Kathryn Mehrtens has been on the faculty of The College of New Jersey since 1984 where she teaches:
- MUS 212: Intermediate Private Horn Lessons
- MUS 229-03: Horn Ensemble
- MUS 312: Advanced Private Horn Lessons
- MUS 412: Advanced Private Horn Lessons
Kathryn has hosted a number of Master Classes at TCNJ featuring such artists as Arnold Jacobs, Philip Farkas, Barry Tuckwell, Bill Capps, and Randy Gardner. Ms. Mehrtens is also on the faculty of Eastern University, Darlington School of Arts, is a member of the International Horn Society and has been an ensemble coach for Summertrios, a chamber music festival. She has an extensive private horn studio with students from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, many of whom have gone on to such schools as Eastman School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, The Peabody Conservatory, The Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and successful musical careers. Since 2001, Ms. Mehrtens has been instrumental in organizing an orchestra for “A Celebration of Life,” a benefit concert to raise funds for Keystone House Hospice.
Ms. Mehrtens is an active freelance hornist in the Philadelphia area. She is 3rd horn with the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra and 1st horn in the pit orchestras of the Forrest and Merriam Theaters as well as the Academy of Music, where she has played Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Spamalot, Showboat, Cats, Miss Saigon, Beauty and the Beast, Wicked, The Lion King, and numerous other touring Broadway productions. She also performs regularly with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Delaware Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Orchestra 2001, West Jersey Chamber Orchestra, Academy of Vocal Arts, and Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic. Ms. Mehrtens is included as a member of the Philadelphia Philharmonia on a 2005 recording of contemporary music released by Naxos. She has also played as an extra musician with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
